The History of Goodwater Baptist Church

Goodwater Baptist Church was founded in 1864 by a devoted group of men and women who were inspired by the Spirit of God to establish a place of worship within their community. Nestled three miles south of Meehan, Mississippi, in Lauderdale County, the church has a rich history that reflects the faith and dedication of its founders and members.

The original church building, constructed from logs, was strategically located on the main road from Meehan to Savoy, at the turn-off that leads to the present church site. This humble structure served as a beacon of faith and community for the early congregants. As the church grew, so did the need for a larger, more accommodating space.

In response to this need, the second building was erected—a frame structure featuring four Sunday school rooms and an auditorium with a seating capacity for 300 people. This new building not only provided more space but also allowed for a greater range of activities and services, enhancing the church’s ability to serve its congregation and the broader community.

A significant milestone in the church’s history occurred on January 22, 1895, when a deed for two and a half acres of land from Ben DuBose to Goodwater Baptist Church was officially recorded in the office of the Chancery Clerk of Lauderdale County. This land acquisition ensured the church’s ability to continue its mission and expand its facilities as needed.

Over the years, Goodwater Baptist Church has continued to grow and evolve, always staying true to its mission of glorifying God, growing in Spirit and in Truth, and spreading the Gospel. The church’s rich history is a testament to the unwavering faith and dedication of its members, past and present, who have worked tirelessly to create a welcoming and vibrant community of believers.
